Research

Main Research Interests
1. Engineered cementitious composite (known as 'bendable' concrete)
2. Application of electrical property measurements for characterisation and monitoring concrete
3. Multi-scale modelling of concrete
4. Nonlinear mechanics of reinforced concrete and fibre reinforced concrete

Current Research Themes
1. Self-sensing ECC
2. Self-healing ECC
3. Strengthening with ECC
4. Modeling of the Electrical Properties of Concrete

5. Behaviour of Reinforced Concrete Structures under High Rates of Loading
This ongoing research (in collaboration with, and supported by, Dr Chikako Fujiyama, http://lab13.ws.hosei.ac.jp/wp/?page_id=57) aims to examine the dynamic response and mechanics of large, shear-critical reinforced concrete beams under high rates of loading. Four 6 m long reinforced concrete beams are currently tested using the UK’s largest railway bed test track facility called Geo-pavement and Railway Accelerated Fatigue Testing II (GRAFT II, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvh8Me44nPc, built by Prof Peter Woodward). These four beams are tested under simulated low- and high-speed trains.
The video below shows the response of a RC beam subjected to simulated 300 kph train.
